Facebook updates, what does this mean for you?
Facebook has announced that it is going to disable several features to make Messenger the fastest messaging platform in the west. While faster Messenger is good for everyone in the long run, it will also require some updates to existing streams.
Below is a brief overview of each section of their update, how it may affect your bot, and what you can do about it.
History of Facebook Messenger platform changes, June 10, 2019
First, Facebook tells you why they're doing updates – to create a fast, simple, and intuitive Messenger interface. This means that they need to remove any redundant, data-loaded or rarely used features in favor of a faster system.
While this creates some inconvenience for Messenger marketers, a healthy Messenger ecosystem is better for us in the long run. Improving your Messenger experience means more time spent on Messenger and more opportunities for people to communicate with your business on Messenger.
We'll walk through the update piece by piece, explaining each change and how it will affect you.
Which will not appear in the New Messenger app
These elements will no longer be displayed when a user interacts with your bot.
Location Quick Answers
The location quick reply, which allows people to send their location to a Messenger branch, is no longer being processed. We recommend that businesses request postcode and address information from the branch. While we're shutting down the existing version of Share Location, in the coming months we'll be introducing new ways for people to communicate their location to businesses in more valuable ways.
What this means for ManyChat users
Using a quick response to specify the customer's location as a custom field will no longer work.
How you can update your bot
How you handle this change will depend on why you collect or share location information.
If you're selecting leads based on region, change the response type for the user input block to "text" and ask for a city, state, or zip code.
If you need an exact address, you can use multiple user input questions so that you have discrete customizable fields for address, city, zip code, state, country, etc.
* Note * All of these solutions are temporary – Facebook has mentioned that it will offer the best option for sharing location data after this update.
Share buttons
The Share button in media, list, and general templates will no longer appear. People can use Messenger's forwarding feature instead of the Share button.
What this means for ManyChat users
Exchange buttons will no longer appear on cards, lists, and other media after August 15, 2019.
Make sure that when you have a "generic" call to action (CTA), it's still suitable for Messenger's built-in forwarding feature. It's a little button with an up arrow on the side here:
If you are missing a forward button, it may be because there is a button on the map that corresponds to the bot. The Forward button is only displayed for cards that only have URL buttons.
You can still call attention to the "Forward" button in a separate message under your card or by taking a photo with a small arrow next to it inside the image.
The Forward button is in the center of the map, so you need to check where it is before adding an arrow to your image.
Be sure to remove any sharing buttons still in your work after August 15th. While they won't be visible to users, this can cause confusion among team members who come in later to edit the bot.
That won't work with the new Messenger app
These items will no longer work in the new Messenger app.
Exchange with web pages inside Messenger
Get started with the Flow Messenger Extension SDK, which allows developers and companies to launch resource sharing from a Messenger web page. As a workaround, developers can generate the link using the context in the web view and allow users to copy the link and share it in a Messenger conversation.
What this means for ManyChat users
When browsing a Messenger web page, shared links on those web pages will no longer cause Messenger to be shared.
Most ManyChat bots should not be affected.
Sharing in Messenger from within other mobile apps
Public access to the Messenger SDK, which allows people to share links and media from Messenger apps, is no longer supported. Businesses and developers may need to make changes to their app to enable sharing
OS People will be able to share Messenger content using the built-in sharing features built into their devices.
What this means for ManyChat users
Share to Messenger links that are inside other mobile apps will no longer work. People will still be able to exchange messages in Messenger using the built-in features of iOS and Android.
This should not affect most ManyChat bots.
Message codes
Messenger Codes Messenger no longer supports scanning these codes. We believe that this experience will be more complete by using the phone's built-in capabilities to scan QR codes from m.me links.
What this means for ManyChat users
It's been a while - messenger codes will no longer work.
How you can update your bot
Creating a ref URL messenger for the relevant stream using R's URL effect tool.
Use a QR code generator to turn it into a QR code (there are several free ones online).
Replace existing Messenger codes with new QR codes.
Many phones already recognize standard QR codes when working with the camera. This means fewer steps between the user and your bot.
By the way, we are currently building a QR code growth tool for ManyChat to make this whole process smoother. Stay tuned for updates.
What will appear differently in the New Messenger app
These elements will still exist, but the way they appear and their functions will change.
Vertical lists
Vertical list templates are not supported. Instead, we recommend that companies use horizontal scrolling carousel templates. Vertical list templates will be displayed as horizontal scrollable carousel templates after August 15th.
What this means for ManyChat users
Vertical list templates will no longer work. The rest will automatically become a horizontal carousel.
How you can update your bot
To keep your images looking their best after August 15th, go ahead and reorganize any vertical lists into horizontal galleries.
Nested menus
The nested menu will no longer be supported. To create a more user-friendly experience for people on Messenger, we're moving from a nested persistent menu to a single-layer menu format. We think this will create an even better experience for people on Messenger. Nested menu items will be displayed as a flat list.
What this means for ManyChat users
If you only use the top level menu buttons, your bot will not suffer.
If you use submenus, they will be displayed as a flat list at the top level.
We suspect that Facebook will eventually reduce the total number of menu options allowed, but allow a longer scrollable list on the top layer.
The good news is that you can put more than 3 items in the top level menu of your bot.
How you can update your bot
Regardless of the result above, you can start configuring the menu to work as a series of cards or a gallery. This leaves you with up to 10 cards, each containing 3 buttons. Plus you get photos!
With our recent update to the ManyChat bot, we already made this type of navigation an option. Go to our Facebook page and type “menu” to try it out.
Sharing streaming music
The Open Graph template that allows people to play songs on Messenger will no longer be supported. As a fallback, we display a generic template that references the URL. When a user clicks on a song used in Messenger, they will be redirected to the audio streaming platform's website or app.
What this means for ManyChat users
Current songs shared on Messenger will now link to the corresponding audio streaming platform's website or mobile app.
This should not affect most ManyChat bots.
Messenger Bot Reviews
Messenger Bot Reviews will be removed on August 15, 2019. They allowed people to leave a star rating and review for the bot. Page owners will no longer be able to view these ratings for their app and page in the page settings or app toolbar.
What this means for ManyChat users
Bot reviews will not be available.
How you can update your bot
If you want to collect user feedback about your bot, you can create a quick flow to request a rating using either buttons or a user input field.
This update creates a great opportunity to ask highly rated users to write a review about your business or share with friends. You can also tag these users for a future reach segment.
This is the wrapper for this Facebook update.
As you can see, Facebook is working hard to make Messenger lighter, simpler, and faster. While Facebook is turning off some of its features, overall a faster Messenger means more people use it more often. And that's good for business.
